Our 5 Axis & 3 Axis CNC Machining Services
Not every part can be machined on a standard 3-axis setup — and not every shop has the equipment or experience to run 5-axis work properly. Northern Indiana Axle does both. Whether your part demands multi-axis simultaneous cutting or straightforward 3-axis milling, we hold tight tolerances, hit your lead time, and machine everything right here in Northern Indiana.
Built for Parts That Can't Be Done Any Other Way
5-Axis CNC Machining
Some parts require cuts from multiple directions, complex compound angles, or contoured surfaces that a standard machine simply can't reach in a single setup. That's where 5-axis machining earns its place.
Our 5-axis CNC capability allows the cutting tool to move across five simultaneous axes — X, Y, Z, plus rotation on two additional axes. The result: complex geometries machined in fewer setups, with better accuracy and less opportunity for error introduced by repositioning.
For your team, that means:
- Complex parts machined in a single setup — fewer repositions means fewer chances for tolerance stack-up
- Compound angles and contoured surfaces cut accurately without manual intervention
- Tighter tolerances on difficult geometries that 3-axis work can't reliably hold
- Faster turnaround on complex parts — fewer setups means less floor time per job
- DFM consultation available — if your STEP or DXF file has features we can optimize before cutting, we'll flag them upfront
This is the capability that lets us take on parts other shops in Northern Indiana turn away.
Who Needs 5-Axis Machining?
5-axis work is the right call when your part has any of the following:
If you're sourcing parts for RV components, agricultural equipment, small engine parts, or any custom fabrication with demanding geometry — 5-axis is likely what you need.
Reliable, Precise, Cost-Effective
3-Axis CNC Machining
Not every job needs 5-axis capability — and running a straightforward part on a 5-axis machine when 3-axis will do is an unnecessary cost. We run both, and we'll be straight with you about which setup makes sense for your job.
3-axis CNC machining moves the cutting tool along three linear axes — X, Y, and Z. It's the right choice for the majority of precision machined parts: flat features, pockets, holes, slots, and profiles that can be fully accessed from above or with standard part repositioning.
Our 3-axis work delivers:
- Consistent tolerances on straightforward prismatic parts
- Efficient cycle times that keep your per-part cost down on repeat runs
- Production and prototype quantities handled with the same attention to detail
- Full material capability — aluminum, steel, stainless, brass, copper, and exotic alloys
- 2-week lead time — same standard across every job on our floor
When 3-Axis Is the Right Call
3-axis machining handles the majority of precision parts in the field. It's the right setup when:
All critical features are accessible from a consistent orientation
Part geometry is prismatic — flat faces, pockets, bores, and profiles
You're running repeat production and need predictable cycle times
Cost efficiency on a well-defined part is the priority
If you're not sure whether your part needs 3-axis or 5-axis work, send us the file. We'll tell you what makes sense — and why.
