About Northern Indiana Axle

Built on a 1994 Bet: That American CNC Still Had a Future 🇺🇸

In 1994, Ken Mullet bought his first CNC machine and started cutting metal in Nappanee. He's still here. So are four of his kids. So is every part we make — nothing outsourced, nothing offshored, every job run on our floor.

How It Started

Ken Mullet bought the business in 1989 after working for several years in the fencing industry. Fencing is seasonal work, and Ken wanted something he could build year-round. That search led him to the shop that would become Northern Indiana Axle.

Despite the name, the company makes a lot more than axles. Customers come to us for buggy axles, cable and hitch products, gun components, and a wide range of precision machined metal parts. Our team also works directly with customers on engineering better parts — offering design-for-manufacturability feedback before a single chip is cut.

From Manual Machines to 21 CNCs Phone

Our Start

Business has grown steadily since Ken attended his first International Manufacturing Technology Show (IMTS) in 1994.

Our Growth

1996 was a turning point. Ken invested in his first Okuma machine after seeing one at IMTS two years earlier. Programming it was a challenge at first, but he learned on his own and through classes in Indianapolis. The impact was immediate: production jumped from 20 axles a day on manual equipment to 80 a day on the Okuma.

Today

Today, the shop has grown from that one automatic machine in 1996 to 21 CNC machines running precision work every day.

A 60,000 Square Foot Shop in Nappanee

Northern Indiana Axle started in a 7,500-square-foot building. In April of 2014, we expanded to our current 60,000-square-foot facility in Nappanee. The bigger footprint also gave us the room to keep adding machines and capacity as demand grew.

Every part we make is machined right here — on our machines, by our employees, in our Nappanee facility. No outsourcing. No overseas shortcuts. 100% American-made.

Quality You Can Verify

Northern Indiana Axle operates a quality management system registered to ISO 9001:2015 through EAGLE Registrations Inc., accredited by the ANSI National Accreditation Board (ANAB). That registration isn't a marketing line — it's a documented commitment to consistent processes, traceability, and continuous improvement on every job that leaves our floor.

We are also a proud member of the Precision Machined Products Association (PMPA), the national trade association representing precision machining companies across North America. PMPA membership keeps our team connected to the latest standards, training, and best practices in the industry.
